I wanted to work for an organization that supported learning opportunities, so I chose Dartmouth-Hitchcock. I started my career in the Inpatient Pharmacy, and with the support offered through our educational assistance programs, I was able to obtain my nursing degree.

I think a lot about the patients and the circumstances that brought them to my particular area on a given day. I want to make a difference in their lives. I want to show the same care, compassion and mercy that I would wish to receive. It takes only a matter of seconds to hold a hand, dry a tear or bring a warm blanket.

My colleagues have names for me like the ‘vein whisperer.’

I want every patient to have a positive experience. Surgical patients can be very anxious and scared. Taking a few extra minutes to listen to their concerns and answer questions decreases that anxiety. I try my best to keep them informed and offer magazines, books or DVDs to make the pre-operative wait more tolerable. It brings me great pleasure to alleviate their worries.

I am a valuable IV resource for my colleagues. When there is a challenging peripheral IV to insert, they often come looking for me. They have endearing names for me like the ‘vein whisperer’ and the ‘vein foxinator.’ I’m just glad to help any way I can to make the most positive outcome for our patients.
